On Thursday, DFC Vice-President Marcel Groleau (QC), along with DFC and FPLQ staff, took the opportunity to sit down with Senator Donald Oliver (NS) who is also in Geneva attending the WTO Public Forum. Senator Oliver shared his own experiences living on a farm, a Christmas tree farm near in Queens’ County Nova Scotia, and talked about agriculture in Nova Scotia.

Mr. Groleau and Sen. Oliver discussed food security, one of the emerging key themes of discussion heard at the WTO public forum. In relation to this topic, the two discussed agriculture as part of international trade, which Mr. Groleau pointed out is very different than other areas of trade given that it is the food that our populations consume, and as such should not be liberalized freely. The Senator agreed that this is an important topic in trade negotiations, and pointed out the Canadian Government’s clear position on supply management in all international trade negotiations.
DFC is very thankful to Senator Oliver for taking the time to sit down and discuss matters of interest to the Canadian dairy industry.
